3D Driftwood Art

Wood. The most widely used commodity in
our daily lives-and the most ignored. Parts of
noble trees, washed upon the shore or
lakeside; broken, lifeless trash to the human
eye. Except to the person who knows how to
breathe new life into them, leaving his
fingerprints upon the art he creates.
Hello. Let me introduce myself. My name is
Tommy Winn, and I have had a passion for
Driftwood since I collected my first piece at
the age of five. To someone, they'd be
nothing more than hunks of gnarled, twisted
wood, but they speak to me of mighty birds
of prey, habitats for colorful fish, rugged
horses and powerful Indians that will
eventually speak to you of works of art,
gracing your home, office or landscape.
Let me share with you the lengthy process
that goes into my artwork. First, the
driftwood is collected at various locations.
Only the most unique and interesting pieces,
some perhaps, hundreds of years old, are
selected. The wood is sprayed with an
insecticide, wrapped and stored for three
weeks. Afterword, each piece is cleaned and
sanitized, and allowed to dry in the air and
sun for three months to as long as three to
ten years. During that time, the wood returns
to a natural dead tree color - chalky white.
Now comes the first important step in the
creative process. However the wood speaks
to me, using a technique I conceived,
different shades and highlights are
emphasized in the wood's texture until the
right effect is achieved, changing to a certain
extent, the personality of the piece. It is no
longer a dead, useless thing. It is alive again,
waiting to be used as either a decorative
accent, a eight foot Eagle's Nest, a coffee
table or Tiki-Bar.
Only the highest quality, hand-selected resin
figures are incorporated into the now-ready
Driftwood to create a work of Natural Art.
What happens next is no easy task. The
process is time-consuming, and must be
painstakingly accurate and carefully
executed. One wrong move could cause
irreparable damage, ruining the artwork.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of
seeing my clients attracted to that one piece
that they claim "Speaks to them." Many
customers have chosen a specific decorating
theme, and request more customized Art that
will either hang on a wall, grace a table or
desk, or become a part of there landscape.
